The Komondor

The Komondor is a large breed of molossers dog that originates from Hungary. The breed is commonly known as the 'Mop Dog, ' the 'Hungarian Sheepdog, ' and as the 'Hungarian Komondor.' In Hungarian the plural for the breed's name is the Komondorok. The Komondor was originally brought into Hungary by the Cuman, the Turkic speaking nomadic people, during the 12th century. The breed's name references this as 'Korman' translates to 'Cuman' and 'Dor' translates to 'Dog'. Despite the breed being relatively popular in modern times, the Komondor went nearly extinct during World War II due to the fact that invading German troops has to kill the Komondor before they were able to capture the house or farm that the dog guarded. The Komondor has an innate guardian instinct and has therefore traditionally been used to guard livestock. The Komondor is an athletic breed that is powerful enough to chase of any predators that may threaten the livestock it guard. The Komondor has been commonly used to guard sheep from wolves and bears! The Komondor has a long cord-like white coat which provides it with protection against vegetation, predators and the weather. The breed's unique coat also gives it a sheep-like appearance which allows the Komondor to easily camouflage itself amongst the sheep it guards. The breed's ability to camouflage itself allows it to easily surprise potential predators. In modern times the Komondor is an extremely popular choice for a flock guardian in the United States of America, as it easily can protect sheep from coyotes, bears and cougars. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Komondor. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Komondor with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Komondor is known to be a calm, steady and protective breed. It is also known to be loyal to its owner but also independent enough to make its own decisions while guarding a flock. The Komondor is also known to be an incredibly fearless breed and will often put itself in danger to defend its flock. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Komondor has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Komondor has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
