The Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel is a breed of dog that is a member of the Spaniel typing - the Irish Water Spaniel is actually the largest Spaniel! As the breed's name suggests, the Irish Water Spaniel is native to Ireland and is believed to have originated around 1000 years ago. Irish folklore suggests that the Irish Water Spaniel is a descendant of Dobhar-chu. Dobar-chu is believed to be a water dwelling creature that is half dog and half fish. The Dobhar-chu is also believed to have fur that has incredible protective qualities. However it is much more likely that the Irish Water Spaniel is a mixture of the Poodle, the English Water Spaniel, the Barbet and the Portuguese Water Dog. The breed's coat consists of very densely packed curly hair which sheds very little. Due to the fact that the breed's coat hardly ever sheds - the Irish Water Spaniel is considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. The Irish Water Spaniel's dense coat allows it to stay warm in cold waters. The breed is muscular and sturdily built. Interestingly, the Irish Water Spaniel has webbed feet which aid in its ability to swim. The Irish Water Spaniel was originally employed as a water fowling dog and was set to work on marshes, bogs, estuaries and rivers. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Irish Water Spaniel. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Irish Water Spaniel with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Irish Water Spaniel is an active, loving, protective and respectful breed. The Irish Water Spaniel make a perfect household pet for families with children, and other small animals, as it is highly respectful of them. It has to be noted that the Irish Water Spaniel is sometimes considered to be aggressive due to its fierce-sounding bark - however the breed is not known to be aggressive in any way! It is important to note that as a working breed, the Irish Water Spaniel has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Irish Water Spaniel has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care.
