The Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a designer breed of dog that was created by cross breeding the Labrador Retriever and the Standard, Miniature or Toy Poodle. The breed was first developed in 1955, but did not gain popularity until 1988, when the Labradoodle started to be used as a hypoallergenic guide dog. The breed was developed by an Australian breeder named Wally Conron. Conron's aim was to combined the low shedding coat and intelligence of the Poodle with the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador. Despite the breed's popularity, the Labradoodle is not recognized as a breed by any of the world's major Kennel Clubs. Due to the fact that there is no standardization in the Labradoodle breed, puppies do not have predictable characteristics. While most Labradoodle puppies share common traits, their behavioral and physical characteristics remain somewhat unpredictable. Due to the lack of a breed standard, the Labradoodle's coat can be short, long, wiry, curly, smooth or rough. The Labradoodle's with straight coats are known as 'hair' Labradoodles. The Labradoodle's with wiry coats are known as 'fleece' Labradoodles. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Labradoodle. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Labradoodle with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Labradoodle has the temperament qualities of a Poodle mixed with a Labrador Retriever and is therefore playful, friendly, energetic and good with strangers, children and other animals. The Labradoodle is also considered to be highly intelligent due to the fact that both of its parent breeds are likewise highly intelligent - the Poodle is often considered the most intelligent dog breed. It is important to note that as a crossbreed of two working dog breeds, the Labradoodle has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Labradoodle has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care.
