Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Keith Emerson (moog synthesizer, organ, piano, electric clavinet) Greg Lake (bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals) Carl Palmer (drums, gong, tubular bells, assorted percussion) The Barbarian -- Take a Pebble (incl. Lake’s “Ballad of Blue”, Emerson’s “High Level Fugue” (from The Nice’s “Five Bridges Suite”), a pre- ”Eruption” (Tarkus) and “Tank”) -- Pictures at an Exhibition (Promenade -- The Gnome -- Promenade -- The Sage -- The Old Castle -- Blues Variation -- Promenade -- The Hut of Baba Yaga -- The Curse of Baba Yaga -- The Hut of Baba Yaga -- The Great Gates of Kiev) -- Knife Edge -- Rondo recorded at Lyceum Theatre, London, December 9, 1970 „We wanted to meet up in August or September and play together, but he died before we could manage to do that“, said Greg Lake in an interview. We are in the year 1970, the early deceased is Jimmy Hendrix. With Jake on the bass guitar, guitar and microphone, Emerson on the keyboard and Palmer on the drums they wanted to create a super group called HELP. What was left is ELP – Emerson, Lake & Palmer. However also without the guitar legend the band still had lots of talent and virtuosity. Lake is the member of King Crimson, with who he made the pioneering album “In The Court Of The Crimson King” (1969). Emerson played with The Nice and wears not for nothing the nickname “Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ”. They went to the studio and recorded their debut album. When “Emerson, Lake & Palmer” was released in December 1970 they were already stars. A mixture of rock, long improvisations, classical elements, jazz influences and with the world hit “Lucky Man” they achieved to join the genre of their previous bands but still emphasise their own features. It is the beginning of a long-lasting vicious circle of studio recordings and worldwide tours. New albums get recorded like by an assembly line. Their second album “Tarkus” goes to the top of the charts in the UK and brought the breakthrough in the USA. The live album “Pictures At An Exhibition” (1971) was despite the lack of promotion one of their most successful albums.
