BARONESS frontman John Baizley emphasizes the band's commitment to avoiding repetition and embracing risks. Their approach to music has always been about being different, defying norms, and not conforming to expectations. This mindset has been the driving force behind their career, even as they release their sixth record. Rather than resting on their past achievements, they continue to push boundaries and explore new territories. This mentality is evident in their latest album, Stone, which exudes a vibrant and direct energy.
To cultivate their artistic evolution, the band relocated to Barryville, a border town between Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Opting to self-produce Stone, the BARONESS members immersed themselves in a secluded vacation rental surrounded by towering pine trees. The rental became an impromptu recording space, characterized by its expansive vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, and brick/glass walls. As they crafted the songs for Stone, Baizley recorded and pre-mixed each track in real-time, granting them distinctive sonic treatments.
Once the drums, guitars, and bass were meticulously tracked, the band returned to Baizley's basement studio to capture the vocals. The album was then handed over to mix master Joe Barresi (known for his work with KYUSS and TOOL) and mastering guru Bob Ludwig (renowned for his collaborations with LED ZEPPELIN and NIRVANA) to add the final touches and refine the overall sound of Stone.
