Il Generale Della Rovere

Late 1950s war drama in which a thief becomes entangled in a Nazi plot to expose Italian Resistance fighters. As punishment for a crime he committed, con artist Grimaldi (Vittorio De Sica) is forced to infiltrate a Milan prison by German Army officer Colonel Mueller (Hannes Messemer). Posing as General della Rovere, Grimaldi attempts to uncover which prisoners are members of the Resistance.

Over time, however, he forms a strong bond with these inmates, which makes him reconsider his duty to the Germans.
