James Boswell, ninth Laird Auchinleck (Edinburgh, October 29, 1740 - London, May 19, 1795) was a Scottish writer, lawyer, and aristocrat, known for his biography The Life of Samuel Johnson (1791, The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL. D.), English doctor, intellectual and man of letters from the 18th century (1709-1784). Son of Lord Auchinleck (read Lord Affleck), judge of the Supreme Court of Scotland, he studied law first at the universities of Edinburgh (1753-1758) and Glasgow (1758-1762), where he was a student of Adam Smith. Subsequently, he would complete his training in Utrecht. Before leaving for that city, he met Samuel Johnson in London on May 16, 1763, a figure whom he professed great admiration and with whom he would later be united by a great friendship
