In 1970 it was adapted by Maximilian Schell into a movie starring John Moulder-Brown and Dominique Sanda. Schell's version was nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. In 2001, the story was turned into the movie "Lover's Prayer," directed by Reverge Anselmo, and starring Kirsten Dunst and Nick Stahl.
