When multimillionaire financier Ashcomb Poor, a married man with a taste for high-living and women, is murdered the suspects are few. Most of the household had been out that evening, leaving only the spunky, brainy Miss Philippa Dean, Mrs. Poor's secretary, and Mrs. Batten, the aged housekeeper at home with the lascivious millionaire. Suspects begin to mount up, a mysterious army pilot, a jaded man about town, several of the dead man's former mistresses, even his wife, who appears to have an unbreakable alibi. Madame Storey becomes convinced Philippa Dean is innocent. But can even she save a woman who swears she committed the crime?
