Always Gloss and Polish. A surfboard without it is simply a potato chip. There is nothing wrong with potato chips other than they are eaten. This is a Journal, Diary, Notebook, Log, Logbook, Workbook, Poetry Repository and/or Book of Lined Paper. It is intended to be used for recording things onto paper with a writing implement, although finger-paint will work to some extent. Additionally you could paste stuff onto the pages or rip them out if absolutely necessary.
