Yoga Sutra

The Yoga sutra: A Worldview for the 21st Century This commentary on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras (ca. 200 BCE-300 CE), is an interpretation of the Sutras (aphorisms) from the point of view of addressing the problems that have emerged due to the wide-spread adoption of internet-based advances in communication. The Yoga Sutra offers mental training practices based on the metaphysics and the psychological insights of several generations of Indian philosophers and spiritual seekers. These are aimed at finding relief from the trials and tribulations of life by nurturing discriminating intelligence and thereby establish a lasting state of peace. The world view that is the basis of the Yoga Sutra is time-tested and relevant today. Its message is that we have the power to change our life experience by changing ourselves. The concepts and practices therein are compatible with modern developments in a wide range of disciplines, such as, philosophy, physics, psychology, neurology, and therapeutic options. These can be a resource for teachers and young adults who are looking for an anchor in today's fast changing world. A modern interpretation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra can provide insights into how to address some of the emerging psychological issues that I have identified based on several modern studies. These are: 1. Hyper-stimulation and reactivity;2. recurrent stress, and burnout; 3. ego, narcissism;4. materialism and consumerism; 5. inability to sustain attention; 6. weakened Interpersonal relationships; and 7. existential angst. These issues can be addressed through practices that nurture the ability to exercise restraint, pay attention, develop listening skills, and foster the sense of an authentic identity. The argument of this book is that reframing a situation, examining it from a different perspective, a new way of looking at one's own thinking and experiences, can help reduce many anxieties and worries. Body/mind centered practices can provide opportunities for distancing oneself from routine anxieties and gain new insights about life and oneself. Patanjali's Yoga is more than a physical discipline. The Yogic view of identity and the universally applicable ethical norms and personal disciplines that are part of this discipline, provide powerful arguments for addressing various cultural issues arising from the above-mentioned emerging trends in the contemporary mindset of young and old. The Yoga discipline provides many practice options to choose from, options that are flexible and compatible with modern life-styles. Plus, they leave lasting benefits. The following eight key concepts in the Yoga Sutras can be instrumental in enhancing our ability to deal with the needs of the times. These are:1. Attention: Strengthening the ability to hold attention;2. Afflictions: illusions, biases and fears.3. Self: perceptions regarding identity.4. Reality: Our ideas thereof;5. Mind: It's nature;6. Ethical practices and self-disciplines;7. Practice: Needs and options;8. Wisdom: gaining an understanding of personal and inter-personal reality through subjective experience. The commentary on each Sutra identifies its subject and key issues addressed.
