This book describes that Hell is conceived as a place of retribution or a form of punishment in most Abrahamic religions. In the Roman Catholic Church, in many other Christian denominations, such as the Baptists and Episcopalians, and some Greek Orthodox churches, Hell is taught as the ultimate fate of all who have not been considered deserving the Universal Redemption and the Last Judgement. The native Americans' hells comprise the Mictlan Aztec faith, the Adlivun Inuit religion, and the Waka Shobari religion of the Yanomami. Annihilationism requires the doctrine that "the wicked" are killed rather than tormented indefinitely in the typical "Hell" or the lake of fire. In Buddhism, the lowest realm of regeneration is Hell. Not all Muslims and thinkers believe that Hell is an everlasting destination or that any condemned will finally be forgiven and permitted to reach Heaven. Hell is not eternal, while torment can endure for eons until it is resurrected again. Ksitigarbha journeys to the Hell realms in popular literature to rid beings of their misery. The deity Yama presides over Hell in the Garuda Purana. Early Vedic faith had no definition of Hell. Later in Hindu literature, particularly the Law Books and Puranas, more realms are listed, including the Hell-like domain. Virgil himself is not doomed to Hell in Dante's poetry, but rather, as a virtuous pagan, is relegated to Limbo on the brink of Hell. The Great Divorce borrows its title from William Blake's Heaven and Hell Union and its influence from the Divine Comedy.
