A nameless man who loses his will to live, walks to the center of a bridge, and with a relieved sigh, he leaps to end his suffering. And it does, but not by death. Sandy, who witnessed the attempted suicide, becomes curious about the poor wretched soul that she has helped to pull from the water. She visits him in the hospital and finds he has amnesia. He seems unconcerned about his lack of memory. He appears intelligent and interesting and is even in good spirits. When she visits him the next day, she finds him quite distraught that the local police were coming to take fingerprints and photos so they can try and identify him. He tells her he is terrified of finding out the identity of the man that tried to leap to his death. Sandy, a widow, decides to help John Doe escape from the hospital, and takes him home with her. This quite upset her twenty-five year old daughter, Dani, who then takes
it upon herself to find out who this strange man really is.
John Doe, as it turns out, is an excellent cook. And he becomes Sandy's personal gardener to work off his room and board. When a body washes up on Sandy's beach, he becomes quite the detective. John's diligent efforts to solve this crime lead him on a wild goose chase that includes an indigenous whale hunt and an unplanned boat ride to Mexico with the murderers, where he is left stranded without ID or a way back.
Dani, in her search for the identity of John Doe, finds a missing priest from Canada that matches John's description. The possibility that he is a priest complicates Sandy's building fondness for her John Doe. When he is kidnapped by the killers, she takes it upon herself, priest or no priest, to drive to Mexico and find him. And she does but he is not alone. She now has two people to help in their illegal border crossing.
And then there was the surprise Balloon ride, and of course, an unexpected run in with a Bigfoot
