Can a Thames Valley Detective Inspector overcome impossible odds and prevent the assassination of the Prime Minister?
It is post-Brexit Britain. DI Gray is investigating the death of a journalist, Sierra Nicholls, when he is summoned to Scotland Yard. In a tense meeting, the Home Secretary, together with the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, tells him that the Former Master of the Royal Household, Philip Nicholson, a 'Remainer' who had been part of a plot to blow up the Cabinet, was in France and had found an assassin who was on his way to kill the Prime Minister. He is called Smilodon which means Sabre-toothed cat.
Inspector Gray, who is installed in a safe house with a grizzled Sergeant Watts and housekeeper Polly, contacts Commander Truchaud of La Police Nationale in Paris. He will track Philip Nicholson but wants an Algerian terrorist, Mehdi Arraq, brought back to France. DI Gray faces confusion and duplicity and discovers that the terrorist had killed Sierra Nicholls after the two of them had been photographed with the Prime Minister.
Information is being leaked at high level and DI Gray realises that he must draw out the traitor.
But the assassin is still on the loose and heading for Downing Street.
