If you are looking to escape the more populous walking areas of the Highlands this is the book for you. The author takes us away from the "honey-pots" with six superblong-distance backpacking routes of three to eight days''duration, virtually all on rights of way.
This is Wild Scotland- a working landscape of deer forests, grouse moor, hill sheep farms, beef and diry farms and commercial forest, where a sense of peace and isolation is guaranteed and accommodation is largely comfined to the odd B+B, youth hostel, bothy or tent.
Each route has opportunities to explore adjacent glens and peaks, with variations and alternatives to the set walks.
Route starts and finishes are well supplied by bus and rail services, and the numertous sketch maps for each walk provide additional information to the OS maps. All the routes have been surveyed and graded by the author, whose affection for the "wild places" is manifest.
Walk 1:
Taynuilt to Dawhinnie,
Walk 2: Blair Atholl to Aviemore or Tomintoul
Walk 3 Rannoch Moor
Walk 4 Drymen to Killin and Glen Almond
Walk 5 Dunkeld to Aboyne
Walk 6 Across the Monadhliath
Peter koch-Osborne is author of the very popular Scottish Glens series of guides for walkers and mountainbikers. He lives and works as a writer and photographer in Inverness-shire.
