Charles I is one of those enigmatic monarchs whose life story never fails to fascinate historians and readers alike. But, like so many historical figures, mention his name to most people and they will remember so few things about him: in this case, that he caused a Civil War; was held prisoner in Carisbrooke Castle, was tried as a traitor and beheaded.

Charles came to Dorothy Davies in January 2006. When he made himself known, she realised that for the previous ten years, mediums had been saying 'can you take a Charles?' and they had been getting her standard answer, 'no, but I will hold the name for now.' There had been no Charles in her life as far as she was aware. When she finally got to speak to this quiet, gentle, loving, yet autocratic man, she asked if it was he who had tried to reach her during the preceding years and he confirmed it was. But, like so many spirits, he had to wait until she was ready to accept his coming into her life. Once he was there, Dorothy found herself full of questions about his life.
