In the last months of World War Two a Royal Navy minesweeper anchors in a port on the Albanian coast. The town onshore is in the hands of British Special forces led by a genial Albanian. A junior officer aboard this ship is told that the Albanians are plotting to murder an international leader even though peace is so near. Twenty years later this same junior Lieutenant, Henry Barnes is librarian in a Hampshire market town. He is recently bereaved his wife having died. He has one child seventeen year-old Lisa who is a wild teenage left-wing activist. Henry is planning a reunion of his old shipmates and also the special-forces men they remember. But why are these ageing special-forces soldiers being one by one murdered and what incident did they witness in wartime Albania that would cause this to happen. The story unfolds in the famous heatwave summer of 1976. Both Lisa and her father find themselves under threat but despite this both are drawn into loving relationships before the unforeseen secret is revealed.
