Describing Wildlife
C Mahoney
This workbook gives students a chance to describe wildlife photos that I took while exploring local trails in North Carolina and Virginia: a mallard on a pond, a dragonfly clinging to a stalk, a butterfly on a twig, a honeybee on a flower, a yellow jacket drinking nectar, a lynx spider on a leaf, a ladybug trying to get away, a botfly taking a break, a wren looking to the left, a beetle wandering on a plant, a bumblebee and blue jay and lizard and much more. Your students will love the images as you teach them to analyze details and describe everything they see. Using an image to clarify meaning in a text is a Common Core standard in second and third grade (2. RI.7 and 3. RI.7). And I have made three versions: describe TEN things you see, describe FIVE things you see, and describe what you see (six blank lines).
Take a look at the Preview to see a few sample pages and decide if you'd like to bring nature into your classroom, either as a whole-class activity or in a literacy center.
