Fifth-grader Ashley Adams is the best reader at her school. Every year since first grade she has won the award for reading the most books. This year, however - her last at Eva McCune Elementary School - things have changed. Her young, vibrant reading teacher, Ms. Castillo, leaves unexpectedly and is replaced by a strange man who uses his new invention called the Reader-Meter 3000 to test the students every week. The school's reading award will now go to whoever can read the fastest. Suddenly, Ashley has competition from classmate JT Bain, and it's a fight to the finish to see who wins.
