Friend and Foe

Publisher Marketing: It's three days before the murder of Andrea Trask. The two men in her life who have meant the most to her - Max Roarke and Robby Trask - are going to be accused of the crime. They will loudly proclaim their innocence. Andrea, scion of old money, stepdaughter to an Italian Count, is married to one of the men, but has been considering divorce so she can marry the other. In her diary, she confesses that for years she has been mesmerized by their audacity and flamboyance and the fact they have made her the center of their universe. Now at this late date, she realizes that what she initially perceived as their free spirits was, in fact, a total lack of responsibility. What she took as their engaging irrepressibility, was nothing more than a snub to convention - wanton abandon. She observes that because of their vast fortunes, neither man has ever had any challenges in their lives. As a result, they manufactured their own - contrived competitions, bizarre contests, anything where they could pit themselves one against the other. It has gotten to the point where they have reduced virtually every facet of their relationship to a one-on-one match. They have narrowed their world to a population of two. In their world, you are either first or last. To be last is intolerable. Yet, they remain the best of friends, while acting as the worst of enemies. Over time, Andrea finds herself consigned to the role of reluctant spectator and ultimately, their trophy. Eventually, she comes to understand that she is not their trophy, but their victim. Now, three days before her murder, she intends to reverse their roles and make them the victims.
