A Mixture of Thoughts
Filton Hebbard
I strongly believe that neither stories nor verse should be written in any choice of words that are beyond the vocabulary of prospective readers.
It is irritating to read fiction with a dictionary by one's side, nor should it be necessary.
The late Sir Winston Churchill, a master ot the English language, won the hearts of his fellow country men and women during World War 2 because in his speeches he chose a language known to every level of education.
He did not want anybody to marvel at his vocabulary, then wonder what it meant. He wanted them all to understand his vocabulary and feel the depth of it in its simplicity and sincerity.
As a child I admired his ability to reach every English man, woman, or child who heard him speak.
So I rarely use words that are stumbling blocks to the pleasure of reading.
In this book I have tried to touch on the sentiments that could be in any of us.
Apart from the poetry, there are three stories of varying lengths, and they each take us into very different minds.
