This unusual work, a mingling of history with poetry, is by the master hand of the Spanish writer who conceals himself under the pseudonym of Azorin. He takes us back to Spain in the latter half of the sixteenth century. He shows nothing, and yet everything - a king in his palace, a nobleman in his country seat, Avila of the Knights, a monk writing his treatise on prayer, sheep, a mountain, flowers, the Basque Country, Castile, Catalonia, the simple and natural emotions.
