Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ...wiry thread in calico goods cannot be made to produce a soft, velvety cloth equal to that which has a minimum of strength with the least possible amount of twist. With this class of yarns in any open reed, two in a dent, and a good " cover" put on, by the method already explained, the fabric would appear as if woven in a far finer reed. Goods made in a 40-reed would certainly look equal to a cloth made in a 60-reed if wanting "cover,' and of hard, twisted yarns. Shedding tappets, if of imperfect construction, will affect the quality of the cloth in weaving, as well as cause continual obstruction to the passage of the shuttle by broken warp threads. The proper size and dimensions of tappets must depend upon length of stroke and distance from the tappet shaft to the treadles. The length of stroke is of importance, because the smaller the shed and the less friction of warp threads. The size of the shuttle and shed should be almost equal to each other, for if the shuttle can just pass freely through the reed that is sufficient, and more than this is power uselessly expended. The Pause.--The length of a pause to be given a tappet, or, plainly, the time during which the shed should remain fully open, and at what point of the crank's revolution it should take place, require some consideration, and this seems to be a matter on which nearly all loom makers differ, where no difference ought to exist, only for the necessary short and long pause. Those made for the short pause only require the shed to be open during the time the shuttle is passing through it. A difference of opinion exists as to what portion of the crank's revolution this will occupy. For all practical purposes it will take as near as possible one-third--that is, when...
