Drifters

Welcome to Reborn New York, a megapolis rising out of the ruins of an old civilisation. The world has slowly recovered from a global nuclear war and the survivors have started to rebuild megacities and spread again across the continents of the globe. Reborn New York is a phoenex rising amongst the ashes, a city of tall shining spires, connected by a transport network of spagetti-like network of tubes raised above the ground. The city is powered by huge nuclear Fission reactors and protected by an ultrasonic dome. Over 60 million citizens struggle in poverty and hard living conditions, while the Elite live in protected, silver towers rising hundreds of meters into the clouds. The city is controlled by an authoritarian dictatorship, while beyond the city barriers lies a barren desert that reaches across the vast continent of America. Dina is a struggling artist, living on the outskirts of the city, near the dome barrier that protects the city from the outside world. The barrier also keeps all citizens trapped within and prevents open communication with the people living in other cities. She meets Ben, a drifter, hiding from the authorities in a shed in her back garden. In the year 148 (2255 in the old calendar system) vagrancy, or 'Drifting' as it is known, is illegal. If caught, drifters are taken away, never to be seen again, and nobody knows where they are taken and what happens to them. Dina and Ben form an unlikely bond of friendship, but can they survive the city forces marshalled against them, bent on their destruction? This novel explores a possible scenario of life in a post-apocalyptic era. Cast yourself forward a few centuries and imagine a culture that has been shaped by the horrific tragedies of the past and the harsh conditions of the present. How would people think and view themselves, what type of customs might they have and how will they communicate with each other? Will civilisation finally be able to move beyond the conflict and strife that has characterised humanity for thousands of years?
