"How do you feel this morning, Merry?" he asked, on entering. "Bad." "Where?" "All over." "Your ankle" "That is all right, but I'm ill." "You look it. Why, you were white as a sheet when 1 came in and found you sitting there by that open window." "I'm that way every morning now. Can't understand it. Never troubled that way till less than a week ago. It's getting worse and worse. If I was a fellow who drank" "But you are not." "Never touched a drop in my life. This is no 'morning after' head, but it feels bad enough. Couldn't be worse if I'd been out all night and guzzled a barrel of fizz. I'm shaking, too. Look at that hand; see it tremble! He was pale and itrembling, while there was a stare in his big eyes. He was sitting in pajamas by the open window of his room. It was barely sunrise, and there was hardly a sign of life anywhere about the college buildings. It was a beautiful June morning. The light breath of air that blew in at the window was fragrant with the freshness of the season. Below the window lay the deserted campus, shaded by the great trees. Oh, the stories those old trees might tell could they talk! They had beheld wild scenes of rejoicing over baseball or football victories. They had witnessed fierce rushes and sanguine battles over the fence.
