West Virginia Revolutionary Ancestors Whose Services Were Non-military and Whose Names, Therefore, Do Not Appear in Revolutionary Indexes of Soldiers and Sailors

This is a list of names of approximately 2,000 West Virginians whose Public Claims are on record in manuscripts at the Virginia State Library. Claims were registered for people who nursed the sick and wounded, fed the troops, furnished supplies, buried the dead, rode express, and manufactured firearms. This index to the Public Claims is particularly valuable, therefore, because it contains names of patriots whose services are recorded in no other place unless they rendered military as well as non-military service.
