Kessler was born in Wichita, Kansas, and graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in physics before beginning studies for the Catholic priesthood. He was granted a master of divinity degree from Catholic Theological Union and ordained in 1991. He served as a parish priest and mission preacher for ten years, largely among the Latino community, before his 2001 appointment as managing editor of Liguori's Spanish imprint, Libros Liguori. Fr. Kessler served as President/Publisher of Liguori Publications from 2006-2013.
