The Double Life Of Doctor Lopez: The Real Merchant of Venice

Born in 1525, Roderigo Lopez displayed a capacity for intrigue and espionage. When the 1st Earl of Essex was poisoned to death, Lopez was amongst those suspected. Suspicious of Lopez's involvement, the 2nd Earl of Essex began an investigation. Lopez was finally executed in 1594. He provided young Shakespeare with inspiration for a topical play.
