The collaboration between Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin dates back to 1973. Both were disciples of the guru Sri Chinmoy, and both were undergoing spiritual and musical transformations. Santana was moving from his rock roots into the realm of fusion jazz, and McLaughlin had become famous as the guitarist of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but he wanted to take the music in a different direction from the rest of the orchestra.
