Returnee is the name given to Jamaicans who have lived abroad, and have chosen to return to live in Jamaica. Most return having held uncompromisingly to the view that Jamaica is home, and quite akin to paradise. They believe that on return, they will ease effortlessly into a culture that they have yearned for during their years of foreign sojourn. But do they find paradise? Or, do they find cultural practices, and attitudes that are now as foreign to them as the ones they found when they migrated? Are they welcomed, or accepted under sufferance? Returnee is a fascinating, if not uncomfortable insight into life in Jamaica as experienced by those who have chosen to return.
