Uarda: a Romance of Ancient Egypt

Publisher Marketing: Excerpt from Uarda: A Romance of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 In the winter of 1873 I spent some weeks in one of the tombs of the Necropolis of Thebes in order to study the monuments of that solemn city of the dead; and during my long rides in the silent desert the germ was developed whence this book has since grown. The leisure of mind and body required to write it was given me through a long but not disabling illness. In the first instance I intended to elucidate this story - like my "Egyptian Princess" - with numerous and extensive notes placed at the end; but I was led to give up this plan from finding that it would lead me to the repetition of much that I had written in the notes to that earlier work. The numerous notes to the former novel had a threefold purpose. In the first place they served to explain the text; in the second they were a guarantee of the care with which I had striven to depict the archaeological details in all their individuality from the records of the monuments and of Classic Authors; and thirdly I hoped to supply the reader who desired farther knowledge of the period with some guide to his studies. Contributor Bio:  Ebers, Georg Georg Moritz Ebers, German Egyptologist and novelist, discovered the Egyptian medical papyrus, of ca 1550 BCE, named for him (see Ebers papyrus) at Luxor (Thebes) in the winter of 1873-74. Ebers early conceived the idea of popularizing Egyptian lore by means of historical romances. Eine agyptische Konigstochter was published in 1864 and obtained great success. His subsequent works of the same kind-Uarda (1877), Homo sum (1878), Die Schwestern (1880), Der Kaiser (1881), of which the scene is laid in Egypt at the time of Hadrian, Serapis (1885), Die Nilbraut (1887), and Kleopatra (1894), were also well received, and did much to make the public familiar with the discoveries of Egyptologists. Ebers also turned his attention to other fields of historical fiction-especially the 16th century (Die Frau Burgermeisterin, 1882; Die Gred, 1887)-without, however, attaining the success of his Egyptian novelsContributor Bio:  Bell, Clara Honore de Balzac (20 May 1799 - 18 August 1850) was a French novelist and playwright. His magnum opus was a sequence of short stories and novels collectively entitled La Comedie humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the 1815 fall of Napoleon Bonaparte. Owing to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature. He is renowned for his multifaceted characters, who are morally ambiguous. His writing influenced many subsequent novelists such as Marcel Proust, Emile Zola, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, Edgar Allan Poe, Eca de Queiros, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Oscar Wilde, Gustave Flaubert, Benito Perez Galdos, Marie Corelli, Henry James, William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac, and Italo Calvino, and philosophers such as Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. Many of Balzac's works have been made into or have inspired films, and they are a continuing source of inspiration for writers, filmmakers and critics.
