Black Water
Brenna Marie
In the year 2070, without access to water, a Balkan community crumbled inwards on itself. As clean water supplies dwindled and drought conditions worsened, Alice and her younger sister Chessa grew up as subjects of ethnic discrimination and violence in their hometown. Yet years later, despite their struggle for survival, Chessa and Alice's stories went unnoticed by Western media and silenced by their own government. Now an old woman, Alice recounts memories of her sister and the water crisis during an interview with Joseph, an American writer determined to share her story with the world. To Joseph, the task seems noble: uncover the truth about an ethnic conflict the world chose to ignore while shining a light on current environmental issues. As the interview progresses, however, he begins to doubt the very concept of truth in human memory and must come to terms with his own role as a foreigner in shaping-or even understanding-another country's history.
