Music for Winds and Strings: Ii. Woodwind Parts - Oboe / Clarinet in Bb/bassoon

Publisher Marketing: Music for Winds and Strings is comprised of three movements and is scored for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, violin, viola and cello. Composed in 2013 and 2014, the movements are titled: I. Tessellation 12 II. Caprice in Blue III. Passacaglia, Fantasy and Chorale The movements can be performed individually, or as a group. As a group the sequence above is preferred, but the players can also choose a different order if desired. I. Tessellation 12 was inspired by the later chamber music of Stravinsky and the art of M. C. Escher. Th e title refers to the tone row of 12 notes, and to the various symmetries that are possible in arranging the sequence and iterations of the row. II. Caprice in Blue was composed as an homage to New Orleans blues and ragtime music, and contains iconic blues guitar riffs as well as some transfigured Gershwin influences. III. Passacaglia, Fantasy and Chorale is based on an ancient Tibetan chant melody, and, as each instrument enters, the meter progressively changes from 6/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 etc. until at last the violin and oboe enter in 2/4. Following the Passacaglia is a Fantasy loosely based on motivic elements of the Passacaglia melody, and finally a short Chorale finishes the movement.
